Natural food from the beach

English Beurla

[Presenter] There is plenty of natural food to find on the shore, and some say that it is easy to live on what you can gather.

[Canon Angus MacQueen] We are going to make sea lettuce soup just now. And I’ll put it in here. And then we’ll know, look, it’s as it was, wine. We’ll mix this and we’ll add more oatmeal.

[Canon Angus MacQueen] We are now going to get the sea lettuce here and we’ll have the other food, it will go with the other stuff and this is the reward we will get and look now.

[Canon Angus MacQueen] Now, we need the onion, it’s the wee onions that we need and they are there at this time of the year, they are awfully good. They are tasty. Although they are these tiny wee onions, I don’t know the name of them in Gaelic, but in spite of their name, they are far better than bigger onions.

[Canon Angus MacQueen] Tha next thing that we add is bacon. And we’ll add this just as it is here and it will be great. Now the way it is just now, it gives flavour to the seaweed. This adds flavour to the seaweed and it will do well for the oil on the seaweed too. On this bed, we are going to put the seaweed plants, this one. We are going to put it together.

[Canon Angus MacQueen] The mint again. And little mint that came from the garden. Sea lettuce. Take that one. And those on it. We always need to do one for the stranger, in fear that a stranger comes in. This is ready now and goes on the wee ring. And that is it on for the third time.

[Canon Angus MacQueen] Although I am just a sloppy cook, I hope that a woman somewhere in the Outer Hebrides will learn the taste that is so lovely in the world in which we live and there is nothing in this world that brings pleasure of mind as good, healthy food, especially like this where everything came from the west coast of Barra to bring you some joy.
