Dragh mu ghearraidhean ann am Barraigh

[Màiri Rodgers – Preseantair] Tha dragh air nochdadh am measg coimhearsnachd Bharraigh gun toir na gearraidhean air a bheil a' Chomhairle a' beachdachadh barrachd buaidh an sin na bheireadh e mun cuairt Steòrnabhaigh. Chaidh coinneamh phoblach mu na sàbhalaidhean a chumail air an eilean a-raoir, far an do thog daoine draghan mu na seirbheisean saor-thoileach agus an t-seirbheis-adhair chun nan eileanan mu thuath. Tha an aithris seo aig Doneil MacLeòid.

[Doneil MacLeòid – Neach-aithris] Nochd còrr air trì fichead duine a chuir am beachdan mu choinneamh na comhairle air na molaidhean a chuir iadsan air adhart airson sàbhalaidhean buidseit. Bha cuid anns an sgìre ag ràdh gum biodh barrachd buaidh ann am Barraigh na dheigheadh fhaireachdainn nas fhaide gu tuath.

[Betty Nic an t-Saoir – Fuireach san sgìre] Tha e a' cur barrachd uallaich oirnn, saoilidh mi, airson ar guth a thogail agus airson leigeil leis a' chomhairle fios gu bheil e draghail dhuinn. Am beagan seirbheis a tha sinn a' faighinn, gum feumar a ghleidheadh cho math 's as urrainnear agus gu bheil na buill-comhairle, gu bheil iadsan cuideachd mothachail air na sgìrean beaga iomallach air am buail na gearraidhean fada nas cruaidhe na bhuaileas iad air àiteachan meadhanach mar a tha baile Steòrnabhaigh.

[Doneil MacLeòid – Neach-aithris] Tha a' chomhairle ag ràdh nach eil càil air a sgrìobhadh ann an clach fhathast agus gun gabhadh iad sùim ri na bha daoine ag ràdh.

[An Comh. Tormod Dòmhnallach - Comhairle nan Eilean Siar] Tha mi smaoineachadh gum feum sinne na gearraidhean a tha seo a dhèanamh tarsainn nan seirbheisean againn air fad agus bidh sinn gu h-àraidh a' coimhead ri far a bheil seirbheisean, far a bheil buaidh mhòr gu bhith aca ann an coimhearsnachd shònraichte, mas e 's gun tig an gearradh, agus bhithinn an dòchas gun deigheadh sin a sheachnadh nan gabhadh e dèanamh. Chan eil teagamh ann, bha cuspairean ag èirigh leithid còmhdhail anns a' choimhearsnachd, tha sin air a bhith air a thogail aig feadhainn de na coinneamhan eile a th' air a bhith againn, agus 's e sin rud a thèid sinn air ais thuige agus chì sinn a' bhuaidh dha-rìribh a bhios aig an sin ann an coimhearsnachdan fa leth a rèir 's mar a tha an t-seirbheis air a lìbhrigeadh an-dràsta.

[Doneil MacLeòid – Neach-aithris] Ach bha e soilleir bho cuid gun robh dragh ann mun dòigh a bha na gearraidhean gu bhith bualadh air seirbheisean ann an diofar dhòighean ann an diofar sgìrean.

[Dòmhnall Manford - Comhairliche ionadail] 'S e seo an rud a bha mise ag ràdh o thùs, an dòigh a tha a' chomhairle a' dol mu thimcheall air an seo. Chan eil e dòigheil idir agus thàinig sin gu math follaiseach a-nochd agus tha mi uabhasach toilichte gun tàinig daoine a-mach a dh'innse dhan fheadhainn a thàinig a-nuas cà' bheil iad a' dol ceàrr.

[Doneil MacLeòid – Neach-aithris] Bidh coinneamh phoblach eile a' gabhail àite ann an Dalabrog ann an Uibhist a Deas a-nochd mun bhuaidh a ghabhas na gearraidhean an sin. Doneil MacLeòid, BBC An Là, Barraigh.

Concern over complaints in Barra

[Mairi Rodgers – Presenter] Concerns have been raised by the Barra community that the council's proposed cuts will affect them more than the communities surrounding Stornoway. A public meeting about the proposed savings was held on the island last night, where people raised concerns regarding voluntary services and the air-service to the more northerly isles. Doneil MacLeod reports.

[Doneil MacLeod – Reporter] More than sixty people came to express their views on the council's budget saving proposals. A few locals feel that the Barra community will we more badly affected than those further north.

[Betty MacIntyre – Local resident] It puts more pressure on us, I think, to make our feelings known and to let the council know that we are concerned. We need to protect the few services we have as best we can and make sure that council members are mindful of the smaller, more remote communities that will be affected by the cuts, more so than larger town such as Stornoway.

[Doneil MacLeod – Reporter] The council says that nothing is yet written in stone and that they would take heed of what people are saying.

[Cllr Norman MacDonald - Comhairle nan Eilean Siar] I think these cuts need to be made across our full range of services and we will be looking in particular at where services are, where they will affect communities the most - if cuts are in fact required - and I would hope that these would be avoided if at all possible. There's no doubt, matters, such as community transport, have been raised at other meetings we have held, and that is a matter that we will be looking at again at and we can ascertain what effect it will have in individual communities and how these services are currently being delivered.

[Doneil MacLeod – Reporter] But it was clear that some people are concerned about how the cuts could affect services in different ways in different communities.

[Donald Manford - Local Councillor] This is what I have been saying from the beginning, the way the council is dealing with this. It's far from ideal and that was quite obvious this evening and I am very pleased that people came out to let those who came down know where they are going wrong.

[Doneil MacLeod – Reporter] Another public meeting will take place in Daliburgh in South Uist this evening to discuss the impact these cuts will have there. Doneil MacLeod, BBC An Là, Barra.
