Cuirm a' comharrachadh beatha Màrtainn Bennett

[Iain MacAonghais – Preseantair] Nise, tha an fhèis Gheamhraidh as motha ann an Alba ga cur air bhog ann an Glaschu a-nochd. Tha fèis-chiùil Celtic Connections na bliadhna-sa ga cur air chois le cuirm a’ comharrachadh beatha an fhir-ciùil Màrtainn Bennett. Tha a’ chuirm, ‘Nae Regrets’ stèidhichte air a’ chlàr mu dheireadh a rinn Màrtainn, a chaochail bho chionn deich bliadhna. Tha tuilleadh an-dràsta aig Alasdair MacIllFhinnein.

[Alasdair MacIllFhinnein – Neach-aithris] ‘S e stoidhle neo-àbhaisteach a bh’aig an neach-ciùil Màrtainn Bennett, a draghadh ri chèile ceòl traidiseanta na pìoba agus an fhidheall le ceòl ùr pop. Ach, dh’obraich e, gu h-àraidh air an clàr as ainmeil aige Grit. A-nise, aig fèis-chiùil Celtic Connections, thèid cuirm sònraichte a chumail far an tèid an clàr sin a chluiche beò a-rithist, faisg air deich bliadhna bhon a bhàsaich am fear a chlàr e. Bidh cha mhòr ceithir fichead neach-ciùil air an àrd-ùrlar ann an Glaschu a-nochd agus iad mar phàirt de orcastra a chluicheas na h-òrain aige anns an dreach aca fhèin. Tha ceannard an orcastra agus caraid Mhàrtainn, Greg Lawson, air a bhith beachdachadh air pròiseact mar seo bhon a’ chiad turas a chual e an clàr.

[Greg Lawson] As soon as I heard it I just thought, ‘he’s moved, from where he was to a different tonal palette.’ You know? He’s now, he’s gone from a few instruments into many instruments.

[Alasdair MacIllFhinnein – Neach-aithris] Tha cha mhòr deich bliadhna bhon a bhàsaich Martainn Bennett agus e a’ fulang le aillse ‘s gun e ach trì bliadhna deug thar fhichead. Tha choltas ann ge-tà gu bheil an ceòl aige cho làidir ‘s a bha e riamh agus tha mhàthair Mairead, toilichte gu bheilear fhathast a’ cumail an ceòl beò.

[Mairead Bennett] Tha mi toilichte gu bheil iad ga cluich ach ged nach bi e dìreach mar a chluich e fhèin e chan eil sin gu diofar. Ach tha mi gu h-àraidh toilichte gu bheil luchd-ciùil òg a’ dèanamh mar, improvisation dìreach sa session agus air clàran ùra agus arrangements ùr agus tha sin math. Mar sin, tha an ceòl beò agus spiorad Mhàrtainn cuideachd agus tha sin math agus tha e math dhòmhsa cuideachd.

[Alasdair MacIllFhinnein – Neach-aithris] Mairidh fèis-chiùil Celtic Connections chun a’ chiad dhen Ghearran le iomadach cuirm-chiùil air a chur air dòigh. Ach, chan eil teagamh ann gur a deagh chuimhneachan a bhios anns a’ chuirm seo do neach-ciùil, air an robh mòran dhaoine gu math measail air. Alasdair MacIllFhinnein, BBC An Là.

A concert to commemmorate th life of Martyn Bennett

[Iain Macinnes – Reporter] Now, the biggest Winter festival in Scotland launches in Glasgow tonight. This year’s Celtic Connections festival opens with a concert to celebrate the life of the musician Martin Bennett. The concert, ‘Nae Regrets’ is based on the last album Martin, who passed away ten years ago, made. Alasdair Maclennan has more.

[Alasdair MacLennan – Reporter] Martin Bennett had an unusual style, fusing traditional pipe and fiddle music with modern pop. But, it was a success, especially on his best known album – Grit. Now, at Celtic Connections a special concert will be held where that album will be played live again, almost ten years since the man who recorded it passed away. Almost eighty musicians will take to the stage in Glasgow tonight, as part of an orchestra who will play his tunes in their own style. Greg Lawson, the orchestra’s conductor and friend of Martins, has been thinking about a project such from the first time he heard the album.

[Greg Lawson] As soon as I heard it I just thought, ‘he’s moved, from where he was to a different tonal palette.’ You know? He’s now, he’s gone from a few instruments into many instruments.

[Alasdair MacLennan – Reporter] It’s almost 10 years since Martin passed away from cancer at the age of only 33. It would seem though that his music is as strong as it ever was and his mother Mairead is happy that the music is still being kept alive.

[Mairead Bennett] I am happy they are playing it and although it won’t be exactly as Martin played it himself it doesn’t matter. But I am especially happy that young musicians are doing improvisations in sessions, on new albums and arrangements and that’s good. It keeps Martin’s music and spirit alive, which is great and is good for me too.

[Alasdair MacLennan – Reporter] The Celtic Connections festival will run until the 1st of February with many events taking place. But without a doubt, this concert will be a great memorial to a musician many people were very fond of. Alasdair Maclennan, BBC An Là.
