Oileanaich SMO airson fàs fut

[Angela NicIlleathain – Preseantair] Tha oileanaich Sabhal Mòr Ostaig airson fàs fut. A dh'aindeoin an iomadh leasachaidh a chaidh a dhèanamh aig an t-Sabhal bho chaidh fhosgladh 40 bliadhna air ais, tha oileanaich den bheachd gu bheil iad gann de dh’ aon rud - goireasan spòrs.. Tha iad a-nis airson gym fhosgladh ann an Slèite, a bhiodh fosgailte dhan choimhearsnachd cuideachd. Tha an aithris sa aig Ailean MacLeòid.

[Hannah McKirdy] Am-bliadhna tha sinn air a bhith feuchainn gus gym fhaighinn aig a’ cholaiste. Chan eil goireasan spòrs againn an-dràsta aig Sabhal Mòr agus tha sinn a’ faireachdainn mar Chomann nan Oileanach gu bheil e air leth cudromach gu bheil rudeigin againn an seo. Thuirt aon den luchd-teagaisg agam rium am-bliadhna gu robh fealla-dhà a-riamh air a bhith ann aig Sabhal Mòr gum b’ urrainn dhut aithneachadh a’ bhliadhna anns a bheil oileanaich le cho tiugh ‘s a bha iad mun mheadhan agus tha sinn a’ feuchainn ris an sin atharrachadh.

[Ailean MacLeòid – Neach-aithris] Coltas ma-thà gu bheil rudeigin a dhìth aig an t-Sabhal. Tha còrr is 40 bliadhna bho chaidh a’ cholaiste a stèidheachadh an seo ann an Slèite ach, san ùine sin chan eil mòran air a bhith aig na h-oileanaich a thaobh goireasan spòrs. San togalach air mo chùlaibh tha talla far am faodar badminton agus iomain ‘s hockey ‘s a leithid a chluich a-staigh ach a bharrachd air sin chan eil sìon air a bhith aca.

[Hannah McKirdy] Uill tha gym a dhìth oirnne, chan eil gym againn ann an Slèite. Gym a b’ fhaisge oirnne ‘s anns a’ Chaol a tha e agus dhuinne sa Gheamhradh tha e car cunnartach dhuinne a bhith a’ dol a-mach a ruith no coiseachd. Nuair a tha clasaichean againn tron latha agus an uair sin aig ceithir uairean feasgair tha e dorcha muigh agus chan eil solais air na ròidean .

[Ailean MacLeòid – Neach-aithris] ‘S iad Comann nan Oileanach a bhios a’ ruith nan goireasan ‘s iad air aontachadh le ùghdarrasan an t-Sabhail fear de sheann sheòmraichean na colaiste fhaighinn air màl aig prìs ìosail.

[Dòmhnall Angaidh MacIllinnein] Ann an dòigh ‘s e cothrom ionnsachaidh, cothrom math a th’ann nuair a tha sinn a’ teagaisg gnothaichean mar gnìomhachas agus sgilean rianachd taobh a-staigh na colaiste agus as fheàrr na bhith ruith companaidh beag dhaibh fhèin ach bidh a h-uile taic ri fhaotainn cuideachd mar a shaoileadh tu eadar na riaghailtean slàinte is sàbhailteachd agus na rudan a dh’ fheumas a bhith air an cur nan àite. Ach cuideachd goireasan margaidheachd agus a h-uile càil a th’ann agus bidh sinn an dùil gum bi an t-ionaid fosgailte dhan choimhearsnachd cuideachd, tha sin cudromach.

[Ailean MacLeòid – Neach-aithris] Le bhith fosgailte dha muinntir na sgìre air fad tha an dùil gum bi an gym an ìre mhath trang. A rèir cuid ge-tà tha barrachd air dìth goireasan air cùlaibh na cùise

[Karen Elder] Chan eil mòran ri dhèanamh air an oidhche agus mas e is gu robh gym ann ‘s gu robh e fosgailte gu can naoi uairean, deich uairean air an oidhche bhiodh sin sgoinneil. Bhiodh rudeigin againn a b’ urrainn dhuinn a dhèanamh. Agus cuideachd leis a’ bhiadh a tha sinn a’ faighinn an seo ‘s e canteen food a th’ ann agus chan eil sin math dhut a bhith faighinn tuilleadh ‘s a’ chòrr bidhe cho tric. Bhiodh e math nam biodh dòigh air choreigin againn beagan eacarsaich a dhèanamh.

[Ailean MacLeòid – Neach-aithris] Coltas g’ eil iarrtas ann son a leithid mathà, ‘s iad dòchasach gum bidh e fosgailte son toiseach na bliadhna teagaisg ùr an ceann beagan mhìosan. Ailean MacLeòid, BBC An Là, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.

SMO students want to get fit

[Angela MacLean – Presenter] Sabhal Mòr Ostaig students want to get fit. Despite the many developments that have been made at the college since it opened 40 years ago, students are of the opinion that there is one thing missing –sports facilities. They now want to open a gym in Sleat which would also be open to the community. Allan MacLeod has this report.

[Hannah McKirdy] This year we’ve been trying to get a gym at the college. Sabhal Mòr currently doesn’t have any sports facilities and we, as a Student Council, feel it’s very important we have something here. One of my tutors said to me this year that there’s always been a joke at Sabhal Mòr that you could tell which year a student was on by the size of their waist and we are trying to change this.

[Allan MacLeod – Reporter] It’s apparent then that something is missing at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. There’s been almost 40 years since the college was set up here in Sleat but, in that time the students haven’t had much in the way of sport facilities. Badminton, shinty, hockey and such like can be played in the hall behind me but apart from that they haven’t got much else.

[Hannah McKirdy] Well we need a gym, we don’t have a gym at all in Sleat. The closest gym to us is Kyle and it’s a bit dangerous for us in winter to be going out running or walking. We have classes all day then at four o clock in the afternoon it’s dark outside and there are no streetlights.

[Allan MacLeod – Reporter] It’s the student council who will run the facility and they have come to an agreement with Sabhal Mòr authorities to rent one of the old rooms in the college at a low price.

[Donald Angaidh MacLennan] In a way it’s a good learning opportunity when have teaching topics such as business and administrative skills within the college and what better method than for them to be running a small company for themselves. But there will be plenty support on offer too as you would expect, such as healthy and safety regulations and what procedures need to be in place. But also with marketing facilities and all that entails. We hope the centre will be open to the community too, that’s important to us.

[Allan MacLeod – Reporter] As it will be open to people in the entire area it is hoped that the gym will be relatively busy. According to some though, the problem is more than just a lack of facilities.

[Karen Elder] There’s not much to do at night and if there was a gym and if it stayed open until say, nine o clock , ten o clock at night then that would be great. We’d have something to do. Also, we get canteen food here and it’s not all that good for you to be eating so much so often. It would be good if there was some way for us to do some exercise.

[Allan MacLeod – Reporter] It seems there’s demand for the like then and they hope it will be open for the new teaching year in a few months’ time. Allan MacLeod, BBC An Là, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.
