Buntàta ionadail dha sgoiltean Uibhist

[Angela NicIlleathain – Preseantair] Chaidh iarraidh air croitearan ann an Uibhist beagan a bharrachd buntàta a chur na bhios a dhìth orra fhèin airson buntàta a chumail ri sgoiltean an eilein. Thathas a’ cur feum air suas ri ceithir tunna uile gu lèir. ‘S e aon bhuidheann a-mhàin a bhios a’ ceannach a’ bhuntàta bho na croitearan agus cumaidh sin smachd air rianachd an sgeama. Tha dòchas ann cuideachd gum faigh an òigridh barrachd tuigse air às a tha am biadh a tha iad ag ithe a’ tighinn. Seo Shona NicDhòmhnaill.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Co-dhiù‘s ann air a ghoil, a phronnadh, air a ròstadh no an-dràsta ‘s a-rithist na shliseagan , tha a h-uile buntàta a thathar a’ cur fa chomhair na chloinne ann an sgoiltean Uibhist air a thoirt a-staigh dhan eilean. Le taic bho sgeama ùr aig Riaghaltas na h-Alba, thathar ag amas air sin atharrachadh.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Tha mise an-dràsta a’ cur buntàta air machaire an Ìochdair. Agus ‘s e amas na pròiseict biadh ionadail do dhaoine ionadail. Gur e buntàta a th’ air a chur ann an Uibhist a bhios ri fhaighinn aig àm diathaid anns a h-uile sgoil ann an Uibhist.

[Ann Nic GilleFhialain] Tha sinn a’ cur buntàta co-dhiù agus o chionn bhliadhnaichean bhiodh sinn a’ cur tòrr a bharrachd ‘s bhiodh sinn gan reic aig margaidean ann an Uibhist ach sguir sinn an uair sin, cha robh na margaidean a’ ruith. Chòrdadh e rium nam biodh sinn a’ fàs barrachd agus cha bhiodh e doirbh sin a dhèanamh, dìreach beagan a bharrachd a chur gach bliadhna airson a chur chun a’ phròiseict airson a chur gu na sgoiltean.

[Ùisdean Robastan] Tha grunn air ùidh a shealltainn taic a chur seachad sin a dhèanamh. Bhiodh an uair sin am buntàta tighinn a-staigh do dh’ àite anns a’ mheadhan mar gum biodh, ‘s dòcha a thaobh tacsa co-dhiù ‘s ann a’ Bheinn na Fadhla a bhiodh e a’ tighinn a-staigh. Tha an fheadhainn os cionn a’ ghnothaich ann an sin a’ cur am buntàta air dòigh, tha an croitear a’ faighinn pàigheadh air a shon ‘s tha an uair sin am buntàta gan cur gu na sgoiltean.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] A bharrachd air lorg carbon a’ bhidh a tha ri fhaighinn anns na sgoiltean a lùghdachadh, ma bhios a’ phròiseact soirbheachail dh’ fhaodadh e leudachadh gu glasraich agus biadh eile san àm ri teachd. Le buntàta blasta ionadail, bu chòir gun leudaich e foghlam na cloinne cuideachd.

[Ann Nic GilleFhialain] Ma chì a’ chlann, tha iad cuideachd gan cur agus an uair sin a’ coimhead as an dèidh agus gan togail agus an uair sin ma tha iad gan ithe sa sgoil, ‘s e rud math a tha sin oir tha iad a’ leantainn a’ bhuntàta tro na diofar stages gus an gabh e ithe. Tha iad ag ionnsachadh tòrr às an sin.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Faodaidh na croitearan buntàta de sheòrsa sam bith a chur airson seo. Shona NicDhòmhnaill, BBC An Là, ann an Uibhist.

Local potatoes for Uist schools

[Angela MacLean – Presenter] Crofters in Uist have been asked to plant extra potatoes in order to be able to provide schools on the island with some. They require almost four tonnes in total. One group will be solely responsible for buying the potatoes from the crofters, which will keep control of the management of the scheme. There’s hope too that it will enable young people to gain more knowledge of where the food they eat comes from. Here’s Shona MacDonald.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] Whether it’s boiled, mashed, roasted or now and again made into chips, all the potatoes served in schools in Uist are brought in to the island. With support from The Scottish Government, there’s an aim to change that.

Shona MacDonald – Reporter] I am currently planting potatoes on Iochdar machair. The aim of the project is local food for local people. Potatoes planted in Uist will be available at lunchtime in every school in Uist.

[Ann MacLellan] We plant potatoes anyway and years ago we would plant a lot more to sell at markets in Uist, but then the markets stopped running. I would like it if we could grow extra, it wouldn’t be hard to do, to plant a little more each year to contribute to the project and the schools.

[Ùisdean Robertson] Many have shown an interest in supporting the initiative. We would then have a flow of potatoes coming into a central location, for ease they would probably come into Benbecula. The people in charge of matters there will sort the potatoes, pay the crofter then distribute the produce to the schools.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] As well as lowering the carbon footprint of food produce for schools, if the project is successful it could expand to other vegetables and food produce in the future. Eating local, tasty potatoes should also widen the children’s knowledge.

[Ann MacLellan] If the children see that they are planted, grown, picked and then eaten in school, it’s a good thing as they are following the potato through all the different stages before it’s ready to eat. They can learn a lot from that.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] The crofters can plant any variety of potato for this project. Shona MacDonald, BBC An Là, in Uist.
