Lamraig ùr am Bàgh a' Chaisteil

[Innes Rothach – Preseantair] Thòisich obair ann am Barraigh airson laimrig nas fhasgaiche a thogail dha na iachtaichean is eile a tha a’ cur a-steach gu Bàgh a' Chaisteil. Aig a’ cheart àm tha Buidheann Choimhearsnachd Bharraigh 's Bhatarsaigh a' sireadh airgead airson siostam do phontoons a chur dhan Bhàgh airson a dhèanamh co-ionann ri puirt eile anns na h-Eileanan. Tha an aithris seo aig Shona NicDhòmhnaill.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Bidh na ceudan iachtaichean a’ tadhal air Barraigh gach bliadhna. Ann am Bàgh a’ Chaisteil tha 12 àite anns a’ bhàgh far am faigh iad ceangal aig acaire. An uair sin ge-tà, feumaidh iad faighinn gu tìr.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Air latha mar a th’ ann an-diugh, le gaoth làidir a’ sèideadh às an deas agus an earra-dheas, an ìre mhath dìreach air a’ bhàgh ann an seo, bhiodh e gu math doirbh do dhuine faighinn air tìr gu sàbhailte far iacht le còbala bheag.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Tha obair a’ dol a-nis gus àite-ceangail sàbhailte agus ceum gu tìr a chur suas.

[Dòmhnall Manford] Tha e riatanach, riatanach gum faigh sinn, beag aig bheag, am bàgh a dhèanamh nas sàbhailte ’s nas sàbhailte do dh’ eathraichean airson tighinn a-staigh. Agus ’s e am post air sìor thaobh a Deas nan Eileanan an Iar agus tha daoine daonnan airson tighinn a-staigh a Bhàgh a’ Chaisteil agus feumaidh sinn a dhèanamh cho freagarrach ’s cho sàbhailte ‘s as urrainn dhuinn airson an cothrom thoirt dhaibh sin a dhèanamh.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Chaidh pontoons a thogail ann am Loch nam Madadh bho chionn trì bliadhna agus dh’ fhosgail goireas mòr le fasgadh dha-rìribh ann an Loch Baghasdail an-uiridh.

[Dòmhnall Manford] ‘S tha sinn air, iomadh bliadhna bhith sàs ann a’ feuchainn ri leithid seann ghnìomhachas a chur ann am Barraigh. ’S e aon eilean a tha air fhàgail sna h-Eileanan an Iar a tha às aonais a’ ghnìomhachais a tha seo, ach tha e cho riatanach, chan ann a-mhàin do iachtaichean a tha tighinn dhan eilean ach seadh, chlann agus ag ionnsachadh mu obair mara agus a bhith an sàs sa mhuir.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Tha e na amas aig a’ bhuidhinn coimhearsnachd pontoons a thogail agus tha iad sin air an sealltainn ann an uaine anns an dealbh seo. Bidh an obair aig an ìre seo deiseil ann am beagan sheachdainean. Aig an aon àm tha tagraidhean a-staigh airson maoineachadh dhan dàrna pìos dhen phròiseact agus ma bhios iad sin soirbheachail, bidh an còrr dhen obair a’ dol air aghaidh bho thoiseach na h-ath-bhliadhna. Shona NicDhòmhnaill, BBC An Là, ann am Barraigh.

New landing in Castlebay

[Innes Munro – Presenter] Work began in Barra to build a more sheltered landing for yachts and such like, which berth in Castlebay. At the same time, Barra and Vatersay Community are looking for money to build pontoons in the bay to make it equal other ports on the Islands. Shona MacDonald has this report.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] Hundreds of yachts visit Barra each year. In Castlebay there are 12 moorings in the bay where they can anchor. Then though, they need to get to land.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] On a day like today, with strong winds blowing from the south and south east, pretty much right onto the bay here, it would be quite difficult for people to get ashore safely from a yacht with a little dinghy.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] Work is now under way to construct safe tie up points and a walkway to land.

[Donald Manford] It’s essential that little by little, we make the bay safer and safer for boats to berth. This is the most westerly port in the south of the Western Isles, people always want to come into Castlebay and we must make it as suitable and as safe as we can in order to give them an opportunity to do so.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] Pontoons were built in Lochmaddy three years ago and a large facility with plenty shelter opened in Lochboisdale last year.

[Donald Manford] For many years we’ve been involved in trying to establish an industry such as this in Barra. It’s the one island left on the Western Isles without this industry, but it’s essential, not only to yachts coming to the island but children too, so that they can learn about maritime work and be involved with the sea.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] The community organisation aim to build pontoons and they are shown in green in this picture. Work on this stage will be complete in a few weeks. At the same time, bids have been submitted for funding for the second stage of this project and if they are successful, the rest of the work will go ahead at the start of next year. Shona MacDonald, BBC An Là, in Barra.
