Dè am beachd a th’ aig Ceitidh mu adhartas agus boireannaich san àite-obrach?

Gaelic Gàidhlig

[Ruairidh Alasdair] Beachdan gu leòr an sin gu dearbha. Tha mi a’ falbh a-nis a thachairt ri Ceitidh a tha ’s a chiad bhliadhna aig Oilthigh Ghlaschu. Am bi Ceitidh a’ smaointinn mun a seo idir, tha an t-àm againn fhaighinn a-mach, tha mi a’ smaointinn. Dè nis na seòrsa rudan ’s a tha thu a’ smaointinn a tha boireannaich air a bhith a’ dèanamh ann an saoghal na h-obrach thairis air na bliadhnaichean mu dheireadh?

[Ceitidh] Tha mi smaointinn gu bheil tòrr adhartais air a thachairt, fhios agad, tha sinn a’ faicinn barrachd boireannaich ’s tha iad ann an suidheachadh ann an obair far a bheil barrachd cumhachd agus tha le companaidhean iad fhèin ’s rudan mar sin so tha tòrr adhartais air a bhith a’ tachairt seach, fhios agad, deich bliadhna no rudeigin mar sin.

[Ruairidh Alasdair] Tionndadh ma-tà dhan chuspair mar a bhios iad ag ràdh anns an cànan eile – quotas, nach e? Agus an urrainn dhut ’s dòcha mìneachadh – dè th’ann an quota? Dè bhios sin a’ dèanamh?

[Ceitidh] Tha mi a’ smaointinn gur e, fhios agad na faclan a bhios iad a’ cleachdadh ann am Beurla ‘s e positive discrimination so ’s dòcha riaghaltas no companaidh a’ cur boireannaich ann an suidheachadh obrach gu h-àrd mar eisimpleir. Chan e agallamh a th’ ann, chan e taghadh ach ‘s e dìreach a bhith a’ cur cuideigin ann an obair agus tha sinn a’ faicinn atharrachadh, fhios agad, tha tòrr de bhoireannaich ’s tha iad a faighinn air adhart - tha sin fìor. Ach ann an suidheachain nach eil sin a’ tachairt, chan eil sinn a’ faicinn atharrachadh no adhartas sam bith ann an suidheachan mar sin.

[Ruairidh Alasdair] Dè a-nis th’ ann an h-argamaidean às treasa a tha thu a’ cluinntinn an aghaidh na quotas a tha seo?

[Ceitidh] Tha mi a smaointinn gur e an argamaid às treasa gur e daoine ’s tha iad an aghaidh daoine dìreach a bhith a’ faighinn obair no faighinn cothrom air sgàth ‘s gur e aca no air sgàth ’s an gnè sam bith mar sin. Agus tha mi ag aontachadh le sin gu ìre ach tha mi a’ smaointinn gum bi a h-uile duine ag aontachadh. Fhios agad, gu ìre feumaidh obair a’ dol ann agus feumaidh foghlam ‘s fiosrachadh ‘s eòlas a’ dol ann ach aig an aon àm far a bheil, fhios agad, chan eil mi toilichte, fhios agad, obair fhaicinn is dìreach fir aig a’ mhullach. Chan eil sin ceart agus chan eil sinn a’ faicinn adhartas sam bith agus bu choir dhuinn rudeigin a dhèanamh mu dheidhinn.

What’s Ceitidh’s opinion about progress and women in the workplace?

English Beurla

[Ruairidh Alasdair] Plenty of opinions there for sure. I’m now going to meet Ceitidh who is in first year at the University of Glasgow. Now, it’s interesting to highlight that more women graduate from the country’s universities than men however they don’t do so well in employment – especially in the highest-ranking jobs. Does Ceitidh think about this at all? I think it’s time to find out. What type of things have women been doing in the workplace over the last few years do you think?

[Ceitidh] I think there has been a lot of progress you know we see more women in more powerful roles and with their own companies and things like that so lots of advancement has been happening over about the last 10 years.

[Ruairidh Alasdair] Turning now to the subject, as they say in the other language, quotas – isn’t it? And could you maybe explain – what is a quota? How are they used?

[Ceitidh] I think that, you know the word they use in English is positive discrimination so maybe the government or a company puts women in senior working roles for example. There isn’t an interview, it’s not a choice but just putting someone in the role and we are seeing a difference, you know, lots of women are progressing – that’s true. However, in situations where that’s not happening, we aren’t seeing changes or progress at all in those kinds of situations.

[Ruairidh Alasdair] What are the strongest arguments that you hear against these quotas?

[Ceitidh] I think the strongest argument is from people who are against people just being given jobs or given opportunities for no reason or just because of something like that. And I agree with that to an extent, I think everyone would agree. You know, to an extent there should be work put in, education, information, knowledge but at the same time where there is, you know, I’m not happy you know seeing only men at the top of an organisation. That’s not right and we’re not seeing any progress at all and something should be done about it.
