[Eilidh MacLeod] It looks like there is a good boat being built here, William. It looks really great. What stage are you at?
[William Stewart] Well, I’m just, there are six planks on each side
[Eilidh MacLeod] Yes.
[William Stewart] Well now. There are five more, maybe.
[Eilidh MacLeod] Now, William. I’ve heard the word ‘rangan’. What are they?
[William Stewart] Oh, just wood. It’s wood that goes over to you.
[Eilidh MacLeod] Where do they go?
[William Stewart] They go across like that. Like that, across and then, they’ll then be about two foot apart from each other, or twenty inches from each other.
[Eilidh MacLeod] Why do the ‘rangan’ need to be there in the first place?
[William Stewart] Oh, to keep them together. Oh, they have to be strong, you know, to go, it’s not good to go out with out ‘rangan’ (rungs).
[Eilidh MacLeod] And, also outside, I know that you have a word for this piece – mala.
[William Stewart] Yes, that’s as it is this overlap that goes to the rounds.
[Eilidh MacLeod] Right, right.
[William Stewart] As you know, yes. To bind two together. Look here. This one must go down like this to secure this one and that one together.
[Eilidh MacLeod] I know that there are many different names for boats. What are the difference between them?
[William Stewart] Oh, well, you have a geòla (dinghy), yes. It is easy to get, but the geòla. The eathar is sharp. The geòla is in a square.
[Eilidh MacLeod] The eathar (small boat), it is sharp at each end.
[William Stewart] Oh each end of it, the geòla is sharp at the start.
[Eilidh MacLeod] It must to get through the water.
[William Stewart] That’s it, yes, yes.
[Man] Sgruig. What now is a sgruig?
[Woman] I’ve heard it. People use it for different things.
[Man] I’ve heard ‘sgroig’, but it’s a long time since I have heard that one.
