Gàidheil a’ sabaid a chèile

Gaelic Gàidhlig

[Dòmhnall] Winnipeg, fear de na bailtean as motha ann an Canada far a bheil còrr air millean duine a’ gabhail còmhnaidh.

[Dòmhnall] ’S e prìomh bhaile a’ phrèiridh mhòr, fharsaing mun cuairt tro bheil gach còmhdhail ’s goireas a’ dol.

[Dòmhnall] Tha meadhan Winnipeg dìreach air mo chùlaibh an seo. Cò shaoileadh e ach bho chionn dà cheud bliadhna ’s e àite coimheach, fiadhaich a bha seo. Mìle mile bhon bhaile a b’ fhaisge agus bhon lagh a b’ fhaisge. Anns an Ògmhios ochd deug ’s a sia deug thòisich cogadh fuilteach eadar Gàidheil thruagh, acrach agus sealgairean a’ bhuffalo. A’ chiad strì mhòr eadar na h-eilthirich a bha airson an talamh àiteach agus na daoine a bha an seo bho thùs. ’S e a bha annasach gun robh Gàidheil air gach taobh, a’ sabaid a chèile. Tha gun robh iad a’ sabaid agus a’ bàsachadh an seo ag innse tòrr mu cho toinnte, meallta ’s searbh ’s a tha eachdraidh nan eilthireach.

Chaidh am prògram seo, Na h-Eilthirich, a chraoladh an toiseach ann an 1999.

Gaels fighting one another

English Beurla

[Donald] Winnipeg, one of the biggest cities in Canada where more than a million people reside.

[Donald] It is the capital city of the surrounding large, widespread prairie and all transport and facilities runs through it.

[Donald] The centre of Winnipeg is just behind me here. Who would think it but 200 years ago this was a strange and wild place. A 1,000 miles from the closest town and the closest law. In June 1817 a bloody war started between the poor, hungry Gaels and the buffalo hunters. The first large conflict between the emigrants who wanted to cultivate the land and the people who were here from the beginning. What was unusual was that there were Gaels on both sides, fighting one another. That they fought and died here speaks volumes of how complicated, misleading and bitter the history of the emigrants is.

This programme, Na h-Eilthirich, was first broadcast in 1999.
