A' comharrachadh 500 bliadhna on a rugadh Iain Knox

Gaelic Gàidhlig

[Innes Rothach - Preseantair] Chumadh co-labhairt ann an Dùn Èideann air an deireadh-sheachdain a’ comharrachadh gu bheil còig ceud bliadhna ann on a rugadh Iain Knox. Ged a bha Knox aithnichte aig aon àm mar an aon Albannach ris a bheil an saoghal gu lèir dlighe, tha ìomhaigh a’ chlèirich air fulang thar nam bliadhnaichean le mòran a’ ceasnachadh luach a dhìleib. Mar a tha Iain MacDiarmid ag aithris, chaidh an co-labhairt a chur air dòigh ann an oidhirp sin a chur ceart.

[Iain MacDiarmid – Neach-aithris] ‘S ann às an taigh seo a bha Iain Knox agus aig àrd a’ chumhachd san Roinn Eòrpa agus Alba. Ged a thòisich e na shagart san Eaglais Chaitligich, ‘s e a bha gu mòr air cùl an ath-leasachaidh a thug cruth atharrachadh air Alba agus a stèidhich an Eaglais Phròstanach. Am-bliadhna thathas a’ comharrachadh còig ceud bliadhna on a rugadh e, ach e agus dha-rìribh cho cudromach ‘s a tha e ‘s an latha an-diugh. Chaidh co-labhairt a chumail sa bhaile seo air an deireadh-sheachdain son beachd nas fheàrr dheth a bhrosnachadh.

[An t-Urr Coinneach Dòmhnallach] Daoine a’ sealltainn ri mar a tha cùisean air a dhol bhon uair sin ‘s an obair a rinn e aig an àm ‘s mar a chaidh cùisean bhon uair sin. Gum bu chòir dha daoine a bhith cuimhneachadh is a’ feuchainn ri bhith cumail nan cuimhneachan a tha sin, Knox gu sònraichte.

[Iain MacDiarmid – Neach-aithris] Tha ìomhaigh Iain Knox a’ cumail faire ann an carragh Eaglais Naomh Giles. Ach, tha tòrr a-nis a’ coimhead air mar fhear a tha furasta magadh, cruaidh, gun co-fhaireachdainn agus a bha gu mòr an aghaidh bhoireannaich.

[An t-Urr Coinneach Dòmhnallach] Chan eil sin a’ dèanamh picture a bu chòir dhuinn a bhith faicinn agus cha bu chaomh leam-sa bhith ann an àite sam bith no leantainn creideamh sam bith nach fhaodadh tu gàireachdainn no càil den sheòrsa mar a bhios daoine a’ dèanamh a-mach co dhiù.

[Iain MacDiarmid – Neach-aithris] Mass e a thug dhuinn bun-stèidh deamocrasaidh na dùthcha mar a bha co-labhairt na deireadh-sheachdaine a’ cumail a-mach; a bheil còir againne a bhith nas mothachail air a dhìleab?

[Duine] Was he something to do with medicine?

[Duine] He was very famous, miserable kind of guy and the Scottish dour character originates with him as he was a miserable person.

[Iain MacDiarmid – Neach-aithris] Seo far a bheil e air a thiodhlacadh air cùl cathair Eaglais Naomh Giles ann an Dùn Èideann, chan eil mòran air fhàgail mar chuimhne air Iain Knox ach carragh ann an àite-pàircidh trì air fhichead. Mar sin, chan eil an aon aithne ga thoirt dha agus ‘s dòcha gu bheil e air a dhol à cuimhne beagan, ach tha aon rud cinnteach, tha Iain Knox a cheart cho connspaideach ‘s a bha e a-riamh. Iain MacDiarmid, BBC An Là, Dùn Èideann.

Commemorating 500 years since the birth of John Knox

English Beurla

[Innes Munro - Presenter] A conference was held in Edinburgh at the weekend marking 500 years since John Knox was born. Although John Knox was known at one time as the Scot who was responsible for reformation all over the world. The cleric’s image has suffered over the years with many people questioning the worth of his legacy. As John McDiarmid reports, the conference was set up in an attempt to change that.

[John McDiarmid – Neach-aithris] It was from this house that John Knox stayed at the height of power in the European Union and Scotland. Although he started at the Catholic Church, he was very much behind the reformation that changed the crown in Scotland and set up the Protestant Church. This year, they are marking 500 years since he was born, but who is he and what exactly is important about him today? The conference was held in the town at the weekend to spread a better opinion of him.

[Rev Kenneth MacDonald] People showing how things were at that time and the work which he did at the time. People should remember and try to remember those things, especially Knox.

[John McDiarmid – Reporter] A statue of John Knox keeps watch in the graveyard of St Giles’ Church. But, many now look at look at him as someone who is easy to mock, hard, lacking compassion and who was against women.

[Rev Kenneth MacDonald] That doesn’t create the picture that we should see and I would not like to be in any place or following any religion where you can’t laugh now anything of that sort as people make out any way.

[John McDiarmid – Reporter] If he gave us the foundations of this country’s democracy as the conference made out, should we be more respectful to his legacy?

[Man] Was he something to do with medicine?

[Man] He was very famous, miserable kind of guy and the Scottish dour character originates with him as he was a miserable person.

[John McDiarmid – Reporter] This is where he is buried behind St Giles’ Church in Edinburgh, there are not much left as a reminder of John Knox but a memorial in car park space 23. As such, there is only one image ascribed to him and maybe that has gone out of memory a bit, but one thing is for certain, Iain Knox is just as controversial as he ever was.
