Cùrsa ùr dha maraichean òga

Gaelic Gàidhlig

[Anne Lundon – Preseantair] Nise thèid cùrsa ùr a chruthachadh do chlann-sgoile sna h-Eileanan Siar aig a bheil ùidh a dhol gu muir. Chruinnich riochdairean bho dhiofar ghnìomhachasan mara ri luchd-foghlaim ann an Steòrnabhagh an-dè. Dh' aontaich iad a dhol air adhart a dhealbh an teisteanais ùir - a' chiad dhe leithid ann an Alba. Tha an aithris seo aig Eilidh NicLeòid.

[Eilidh NicLeòid – Neach-aithris] Tha maraichean nan Eilean Siar air cliù a chosnadh air feadh an t-saoghail. A-nis tha an ath ghinealach ag ionnsachadh sgilean a deiseil airson obair aig muir iad. Tha cùrsa ann mar-thà do chlann air S4 ‘s S5 agus chaidh a’ chiad choinneamh a chumail ann an Steòrnabhagh an-dè son bruidhinn air teisteanas ùr a bheir cothrom air trèanadh do sgoilearan nas sine mus fàg iad an sgoil.

[Doneil MacCoinnich] ‘S e an rud as duilghe, a thaobh sàbhailteas agus clann òg a’ dol gu muir, a’ falbh bhon taigh ‘s air soithichean, bheil fhios agad, ged a b’ann dìreach tarsainn a’ Mhinch a bhiodh iad a’ dol. Feumaidh sinn tòrr smaoineachaidh mu dheidhinn agus gu h-àraidh air sgàth gu bheil iad a’ dol air bòrd bàtaichean a tha gu bhith falbh bhon taigh, ‘s mathaid oidhche no dhà. So tha tòrr smaoineachaidh ri dhèanamh mu dheidhinn sin fhathast. Chan eil sinn fhathast, chan e done deal a th’ann.

[Eilidh NicLeòid – Neach-aithris] Cha bheag an obair a tha ri fhaotainn. Iasgach, tuathanas an èisg, turasachd, An Cabhlach Rìoghail ‘s An Cabhlach Mharsanta, am measg eile. Thathar an dòchas gun toir an teisteanas ùr cothrom do dhaoine òga nan Eilean Siar a bhith ceum air thoiseach air càch ge bith an gnìomhachas a thaghas iad.

[Jo NicDhòmhnaill] But in terms of, for somebody young to get into the industry, there’s a set agreed set of qualifications that people require. So anything that people can get before they come into the industry will be a major boost for them to be competitive in employment. And most schools, I haven’t heard of schools doing any set of directly linked maritime qualifications that are industry standard before they leave school. So this is completely new, completely different.

[Eilidh NicLeòid – Neach-aithris] Thathar an dòchas gum bi an cùrsa ùr ri fhaotainn taobh a-staigh bliadhna. Eilidh NicLeòid, BBC An Là, Steòrnabhagh.

A new course for young mariners

English Beurla

[Anne Lundon – Presenter] Now, a new course will be created for schoolchildren in the Western Isles with an interest in going to sea. Representatives from different maritime organisations met with educators in Stornoway yesterday. They agreed to go ahead to draw up the new qualification - the first of its kind in Scotland. Eilidh MacLeod has this report.

[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] Western Isles mariners have earned a reputation across the world. Now the next generation are learning skills to prepare them for sea. There’s already a course for children on S4 and S5 and the first meeting was held in Stornoway yesterday to discuss a new qualification which will give older pupils an opportunity to do some training before they leave school.

[Doneil MacKenzie] The most challenging thing is with regards to safety, young children going to sea, being away from home, on board vessels, you know, although they would only be across the Minch. We need to put a lot of thought into it, especially as they are going to be on board boats, doing an overnight or two, away from home. So we still need to think long and hard about it. It’s not a done deal yet.

[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] There’s a lot of work available. Fishing, fish farming, tourism, The Royal Navy, The Merchant Navy among others. They hope this new qualification will give young people in the Western Isles an advantage over others, whatever job they end up choosing.

[Jo MacDonald] But in terms of, for somebody young to get into the industry, there’s a set agreed set of qualifications that people require. So anything that people can get before they come into the industry will be a major boost for them to be competitive in employment. And most schools, I haven’t heard of schools doing any set of directly linked maritime qualifications that are industry standard before they leave school. So this is completely new, completely different.

[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] They hope that the new course will be available within a year. Eilidh MacLeod, BBC An Là, Stornoway.
