Muinntir Chàrlabhagh ag iomairt airson bùth ùr

Gaelic Gàidhlig

[Innes Rothach – Preseantair] Tha Càrlabhagh air taobh siar Leòdhais air a bhith gun bhùth airson deich bliadhna a-nis. Tha 500 duine sna h-ochd bailtean san sgìre, agus aig aon àm bha deich bùithtean gam frithealadh. A-nise, chan e a-mhàin gu bheil iad ag iomairt airson ùr, mar a tha Eilidh NicLeòid ag aithris, tha iad cuideachd a' rannsachadh air an gabh goireasan ùra eile a stèidheachadh anns san sgìre.

[Eilidh NicLeòid – Neach-aithris] ‘S ann air an làraich a tha seo a bha a’ bhùth mu dheireadh a bha frithealadh muinntir Chàrlabhaigh. Nis, ann an sgìre far an robh uair deich bùithtean, tha an sluagh a-nis ag ràdh gu bheil cruaidh fheum ann airson ùr.

[Eilidh NicLeòid – Neach-aithris] Tha ochd bailtean eadar Tolastadh a’ Chaolais agus Dail Mòr, le sluagh de mu 500 duine. Thòisich iad bho chionn còig bliadhna a’ bruidhinn air bùth ùr fhosgladh, ach chuir an strì a rinn iad an aghaidh dùnadh Bun-sgoil Chàrlabhaigh dàil air an iomairt.

[Calum MacArtair] ‘S ann tron sin a thòisich sinn a’ coimhead ris an sgoil, nuair a bha sinn a’ sabaid airson na sgoile, airson cumail an sgoil fosgailte. Thog e an àirde gu robh sinn a’ coimhead no gum feumadh sinn rudeigin san àite.

[Eilidh NicLeòid – Neach-aithris] Dhùin an sgoil ach tha an togalach fhathast ann. Tha an Comann Coimhearsnachd airson a cheannach agus thuirt buidheann-stiùiridh na bùtha gur e an làrach seo a b’ fheàrr leis an t-shluagh airson bùth. Mar sin, tha gach buidheann a’ dèanamh rannsachadh feuch an gabh na h-amasan aca a thoirt gu buil. Tha beachd ann gu feum goireasan a bharrachd a bhith aca ge-tà, son farpais ri bùithtean eile, an chuid air an tuath agus ann an Steòrnabhagh.

[Calum MacArtair] Chan eil duine dol a stad ann an Siabost airson na bùtha, ma dh’ fheumas iad fuel and all. Feumaidh a h-uile càil a bhith againn. Dh’ fheumadh pàipearan a bhith againn, dh’ fheumadh peatrail a bhith againn, so sin an seòrsa idea a th’ againn. Nis, tha sinn an dòchas gun tig am feasibility study air ais a’ cantainn gun obraich e ach chì sinn chanas iad.

[Eilidh NicLeòid – Neach-aithris] Chan e a-mhàin goireas ùr a tha iad airson a chur an seo ach àite a bhios aig cridhe na coimhearsnachd, mar a chleachd an sgoil a bhith.

[Calum MacArtair] Le bùth an-dràsta, shaoileadh mi an-dràsta gun cuideachaidh e daoine a’ tighinn a-steach. An uair sin tha jobaichean a’ tighinn a-steach, tha sinn tarraing jobaichean a-steach dhan sgìre and all.

[Eilidh NicLeòid – Neach-aithris] Tha Comataidh Bùth Chàrlabhaigh a’ faighinn taic bho Iomairt na Gàidhealtachd ‘s nan Eilean. Tha grunn bhùithtean beaga air fosgladh ann an sgìrean dùthchail de Leòdhas anns na beagan bhliadhnaichean a dh’ fhalbh, a’ toirt dòchas dhan iomairt as ùire seo gum bi iad fhèin a cheart cho soirbheachail. Eilidh NicLeòid, BBC An Là, Càrlabhaigh.

The people of Carloway campaign for a new shop

English Beurla

[Innes Munro – Presenter] Carloway, on the west side of Lewis, has been without a shop for 10 years now. There are 500 people living in the eight villages in the area and at one time there were 10 shops servicing the area. Now, not only are they campaigning for a new one, as Eilidh MacLeod reports, they are looking into whether or not other facilities could be set up in the area.

[Eilidh Macleod – Reporter] It was on this site that the last shop to service the people of Carloway stood. Now, in an area where there were once 10 shops, the people say that there is a severe need for a new one.

[Eilidh Macleod – Reporter] There are eight villages between Tolsta Chaolais and Dalmore, with a population of about 500 people. Talks about opening a new shop began five years ago, but their protests against the closure of Carloway Primary School delayed the campaign.

[Calum MacArthur] It was through that we began to look at the school, when we were fighting for the school, to keep it open. It raised the issue that we needed something in the area.

[Eilidh Macleod – Reporter] The school closed but the building remains. The community council want to buy it and the shop’s management group said that this the preferred site for it. Therefore, each group is carrying out research into whether their aims can brought into effect. It is thought that additional facilities are needed though to compete with other shops, both to the north and in Stornoway.

[Calum MacArthur] Nobody will stop at the shop in Shawbost if they also need fuel. We must have everything. We would need to have papers, we would need petrol, so that’s the kind of idea we have. Now, we hope that the feasibility study will come back saying it will work so we will see what they say.

[Eilidh Macleod – Reporter] It’s not simply a new facility they wish to have here but a place that will be at the heart of the community, just as the school used to be.

[Calum MacArthur] I think having a shop at this moment would help bring people in. We then create jobs, so we would bringing employment into the area too.

[Eilidh Macleod – Reporter] The Carloway Shop Committee are receiving support from the Highlands and Islands Enterprise. Many small shops have opened in rural areas of Lewis in the past few years, which brings hope that this new scheme will be just as successful. Eilidh MacLeod, BBC An Là, Carloway.
