Fèis Leabhraichean an Eilein Sgitheanaich

Gaelic Gàidhlig

[Innes Rothach – Preseantair] Chaidh leabhran ùr air ainmean-àite an t-Sratha fhoillseachadh aig Fèis Leabhraichean an Eilein Sgitheanaich an-diugh. The e am measg grunn leabhraichean a nochdas aig fèis na bliadhna-sa, leis an ùghdar ainmeil, Val NicDiarmaid a' foillseachadh na nobhail ùir aicese a-nochd fhathast. Ach mar a tha Calum MacIlleathain ag aithris, 's iad seann leabhraichean a bhios air aire mòran de luchd- frithealaidh na fèise am-bliadhna.

[Calum MacIlleathain – Neach-aithris] Tha leabhran ùr air ainmean-àite an t-Sratha air cruinneachadh grunnan ainmean a thathas a’ creidsinn nach deach a chur an clò roimhe. Chaidh mòran dhiubh a thogail bho sheann sgrìobhaidhean agus bho bhith dèanamh agallamhan le muinntir na sgìre aig a bheil eòlas fhathast. ‘S iad a’ bhuidheann Ainmean-àite na h-Alba a bh’air cùl an rannsachaidh.

[Eilidh Sgaimeal] Ainmean-àite a tha air tighinn sìos tro na linntean. Tha mi cinnteach gu bheil gu leòr ainmean-àite san sgìre nach eil ann tuilleadh, air nach eil cuimhne aig daoine tuilleadh agus sin an t-adhbhar gu bheil sinn a’ dèanamh an rannsachaidh seo airson na h-ainmean-àite a ghleidheadh mus tèid iad a-mach à bith.

[Calum MacIlleathain – Neach-aithris] Chaidh an Srath a thaghadh airson an leabhran leis gu bheilear ga mheas mar àite far a bheil an eòlas air na h-ainmean ann an cunnart a dhol à bith. Seo an còigeamh leabhar anns an t-sreath ‘A’ Ghàidhlig air aghaidh na tìre’

[Robyn Ireland] ‘S e eòlas cho prìseil a th’ann an ainmean-àite. Chan ann a-mhàin gu bheil e toirt sealladh dhuinn air ar cultar ach tha iad cuideachd a’ mìneachadh an cruth-tìre ann an dòigh eadar-dhealaichte cuideachd, toirt cothrom dhuinn rudan a chì sinn ‘s dòcha a h-uile latha fhaicinn ann an dòigh eadar-dhealaichte.

[Calum MacIlleathain – Neach-aithris] Chan iad a-mhàin sgrìobhaidhean ùra a th’air sgeilpichean Ionad Arois an-dràsta ge-tà, le fèill de sheann leabhraichean ga cumail ann cuideachd.

[Gilleasbuig Fearghasdan] Tha daoine a’ siubhal car fada dìreach airson na fèill. Bha mi a’ bruidhinn ri caraid à Loch Carrann a thàinig agus tha dithis eile a’ tighinn às Uibhist a dh’aithghearr. Cupal a th’ air an dreuchd a leigeil dhiubh ‘s tha iad a’ fuireach an Uibhist ‘s tha iad an-còmhnaidh a’ tighinn a-nall air an aiseig a dh’aona-ghnothach airson coimhead air na tha seo. Mar sin, chan ann dìreach às an Eilean Sgitheanach, daoine a tha fuireach anns an Eilean Sgitheanach, daoine a tha fuireach anns na h-eileanan agus air a’ Ghàidhealtachd, tha iad a’ tighinn a dh’aona-ghnothach airson na fèill seo.

[Calum MacIlleathain – Neach-aithris] Tha roghainn farsaing de leabhraichean ann agus leanaidh an fhèis agus an fhèill a-màireach fhathast. Calum MacIllEathain, BBC An Là, An t-Eilean Sgitheanach.

Skye Book Festival

English Beurla

[Innes Munro – Presenter] A new booklet on Strath place names was published at Skye Book Festival today. It is amongst a number of books that will appear at this year’s festival, with the famous author, Val MacDermid still to publish her new novel tonight. As Calum Maclean reports, the attention of most attending the festival this year will be on older books.

[Calum Maclean – Reporter] A new booklet on the place names of Strath has gathered many names that are believed to have never been in print before. Many were taken from old manuscripts and from interviewing knowledgeable people in the area. It was the group Gaelic Place-Names of Scotland who were behind the research.

[Eilidh Scammel] Place names that have been passed down generations. I’m sure that there are plenty place names in the area that no longer exist, that people have no recollection of and that’s the reason that we conduct this research, to preserve the place names before they cease to exist.

[Calum Maclean – Reporter] Strath was chosen for the booklet it is deemed as a place where the knowledge of names is in danger of dying. This is the fifth book in the series ‘Gaelic in the landscape.’

[Robyn Ireland] The knowledge of place names is precious. Not only does it provide us with an insight on our culture but they also describe the landscape in a different way, giving us the opportunity to look at things we perhaps see every day in a different way,

[Calum Maclean – Reporter] It’s not only new pieces of literature that are on the shelves just now in the Aros Centre though, with old book stalls being held too.

[Gilleasbuig Ferguson] People travel quite far just for the festival. I was talking to a friend from Loch Carron who came and two others are coming from Uist shortly. A retired couple from Uist who always come over on the ferry especially to see all that is here. Therefore, not just people from Skye or people who live on Skye but people who live on the islands and Highlands come especially for this festival.

Calum Maclean – Reporter] There is a wide range of books and the festival and stall will continue tomorrow. Calum Maclean, BBC An Là, the Isle of Skye.
