Young Gaelic speakers make videos for learners

English Beurla

[Angela MacLean – Presenter] Young fluent Gaelic speakers are giving learners an opportunity to learn the language by filming little plays that will be used in primary schools across Scotland. Their work also gives the teenagers the opportunity to learn skills both in front of, and behind the camera. Eilidh MacLeod reports.

[Actress] Oh hello, good morning. I’m Lilidh and this is my new café.

[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] One of the characters who will be helping young Gaelic learners. Two and a half hours of drama in the café are being filmed in Stornoway this week. Stòrlann Nàiseanta na Gàidhlig, the company which produces teaching materials, is behind the work, which is part of the Go!Gaelic project which began a year ago.

[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] The short films deal with 20 subjects in total and they will be distributed to primary schools in the islands and in many other areas on the mainland.

[Donald William Morrison] Different subjects which are dealt with include school perhaps, events, food, things like that. And we pull all of these things together to form one course which is continuous. They begin with a word or two of Gaelic, they then build on that over the 20 units until they at least have a good grasp of the language and a wide range of words which can be used in the many different situations they may find themselves in.

[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] Six pupils just entering 6th year at The Nicolson Institute are working with the professionals this week. Three actors and three who are learning the technical side of the job.

[Alex John] For me personally, this could be something I want to do and it gives me work experience. Work experience helps me and you know, we’ll see, I’ll see if it’s something I want to do.

[Katie] I was thinking of going to Sabhal Mòr to do Gaelic and traditional music. But since I began here I’ve been thinking that I might now do media instead.

[Eilidh MacLeod- Reporter] Eilidh MacLeod, BBC An Là.
