Briathrachas Fhuaimean (2)

Gaelic Gàidhlig

Cuin a chluinneadh tu sgiùcan? ʼS e sin am fuaim a bhios cearc-fhraoich a’ dèanamh. Ann am faclair Dwelly, tha e ag ràdh: sgiùcan – the cackling, plaintive notes of a ... female grouse. Anns an dàn ‘Coire a’ Cheathaich’, sgrìobh Donnchadh Bàn Mac an t-Saoir ‘a’ chearc le sgiùcan a’ gabhail tùchain’. The grouse with her cackle, cooing. A’ chearc le sgiùcan a’ gabhail tùchain. Fàilte oirbh uile. Tha mi a’ dol a thoirt sùil an t-seachdain sa air fuaimean a bhios ainmhidhean a’ dèanamh.

An toiseach – geum. ʼS e sin fuaim a nì bò. Airson‘the cattle are lowing’, canaidh sinntha an crodh a’ dèanamh geum. No tha an crodh a’ geumnaich. A’ geumnaich.

An t-seachdain sa chaidh, thug mi sùil air comhart ‘bark’ agusdonnal ‘howl’ – fuaimean a bhios coin a’ dèanamh. Thatabhann ann cuideachd – a bark or yelp. A’ tabhann no a’ tabhannaich ‘barking, yelping’. Ann an Ros an Iar, bithear ag ràdh tabhann – no ‘tathann’ – ma bhios cù a’ comhartaich airson ùine, agus aire air rudeigin, leithid gràineag.

A bheil sibh eòlach air an fhacal mialaich? ʼS e sin am fuaim as trice a nì cat. Mialaich no miamhail. Tha an cat a’ mialaich ‘the cat is miaowing’. Nas miosa na sin, agus nas àirde na sin, tha sgiamh. Cluinnear sin aig cat ma tha e a’ sabaid no ann an èiginn. Tha an cat a’ dèanamh sgiamh ‘the cat is shrieking’.

Tha mèilich eadar-dhealaichte bho mialaich. ʼS e mèile no mèilich a nì caora no uan. Ma bhios uan a’ mèilich gu goirt airson a mhàthar, dh’fhaodamaid a ràdh tha mèile ghoirt aige ‘it has a sore-sounding bleat’. Dh’fhaodamaid a ràdh ‘mèilich’ airson gobhar cuideachd. Ach tha facal sònraichte againn airson ‘the bleating of a goat’ – meig. Tha am meann a’ meigeallaich ‘the kid goat is bleating’. Tha am meann a’ meigeallaich.

Ach air ais gu mèilich. Nuair a bhios caora a’ mèilich, dè chanas i? Ann am Beurla, canaidh i ‘baa baa’. Ach, ma bhios Gàidhlig aig a’ chaora – no co-dhiù Gàidhlig aig an duine a bhios ag èisteachd rithe – cha chan i ‘baa baa’ idir, ach ‘mè mè’. Agus seo agaibh dreach Gàidhlig air rann air am bi sibh eòlach.

Mè mè, chaora dhubh, Càite a bheil do chlòimh? Tha an seo, tha an seo, A’ fàs air mo dhruim. Poc’ airson a’ mhaighstir, poc’ airson na maighd’, poc’ airson a’ bhalaich bhig, Tha fuireach suas an gleann.

Bʼ e sin a’ chiad òran Gàidhlig a bh’ agam riamh, aig aois òg. Tha cuimhne agam fhathast air turas anns a’ chiad bliadhna sa bhun-sgoil. Bha mi a’ fuireach ann am Broughty Ferry, faisg air Dùn Dè. Cha robh Gàidhlig sam bith anns an sgoil. Fhuair an tidsear a-mach gun robh mi air an samhradh a chur seachad air a’ Ghàidhealtachd, agus gun do dh’ionnsaich mi an t-òran sin. Thuirt i rium, ‘A-nise, a Ruairidh, an seas thu air beulaibh a’ chlas, agus an gabh thu “Baa baa Black Sheep” ann an Gàidhlig? Bha eagal mo bheatha orm, ach ghabh mi e:

Mè mè, chaora dhubh, Càite a bheil do chlòimh? Tha an seo, tha an seo, A’ fàs air mo dhruim. Poc’ airson a’ mhaighstir, poc’ airson na maighd’, poc’ airson a’ bhalaich bhig, Tha fuireach suas an gleann.

Puing-chànain na Litreach: Tha mi a’ dol a thoirt sùil an t-seachdain sa air fuaimean a bhios ainmhidhean a’ dèanamh: I’m going to look this week at sounds animals make. I hope that the use of sa here doesn’t confuse you. It is simply a form of seo ‘here, this’. I could have said an t-seachdain seo ‘this week’. For an t-seachdain seo chaidh‘last week’, it is more common to hear an t-seachdain sa chaidh. You will also hear an t-seachdain a chaidh , meaning the same.

Gnàthas-cainnt na Litreach: dh’fhaodamaid a ràdh: we could say.
